When to commit your Vikings against Tempests

Drekken

I was watching Tyr break down a Tempest game from the last Postbots session, and the same mistake kept showing up. The defending bot would send Vikings toward the Tempests, hesitate, pull back, then send them in again. Each time, the Vikings crossed four tiles of range disadvantage and ate shots for free.

Even though he was talking about Vikings, this can work for all races: Corruptors, Phoenixes, Void Rays are all viable

Half-committing against Tempests is worse than not committing at all.

Tyr’s solution is dead simple. His bot waits until it has at least 5 Vikings before engaging. If there are 5 or more Tempests, that threshold jumps to 8. And if there are 7 or more stalkers nearby, the Vikings don’t go in at all. They wait for the ground army to thin the stalkers first.

Two Vikings cost roughly the same as one Tempest. So if you’re losing fewer than 2 Vikings per Tempest kill, you’re winning the trade.

This came from our Postbots session on Tempest counters.

Take 10 minutes this week to check your air unit engagement thresholds. If your bot sends them in one at a time, or pulls them back mid-fight, that’s your next fix.
