The map feature your bot is ignoring

Why Hello Reader,

I was watching a replay where a single marine held off two roaches for way longer than it should have. If you can believe it was because the marine was standing on a Xel’Naga healing shrine and getting 10 HP back every tick.

Most bots don’t even know healing shrines exist.

Dogtato walked through this on the latest PostBots session. The shrines are sitting right there on two maps in the current pool. Torches has one that allows air units. Persephone has one for ground units only.

The implementation is simpler than you’d think. You modify your retreat destination function. When a unit’s health drops below your retreat threshold, check if there’s a shrine within distance 20. If there is, send it there instead of back to base. Then, in your individual unit micro layer, add one check: if below 100% health and within distance 5 of a shrine, stay put.

That second check is the one that took Dogtato five hours to figure out. Without it, a unit steps on the shrine, gets one heal tick, hits your retreat threshold, and walks away at 60% health. You need to tell it: if you’re already on the shrine and you’re not full, don’t move.

This week, check if your bot uses any map-specific features. Start with destructibles. The healing shrines are in there under Xel’Naga Healing Tower. You might be surprised what your bot has been walking past.
